The arrival of little Princess Charlotte this week has inspired me to make a floral crown. A fitting way to celebrate, don’t you think? Flower crowns are everywhere at the moment; magazines, the high street, Etsy … but a fresh flower crown is something a little bit special!
So I thought I would share with you the secrets to making your own floral headpiece in time for the summer. I have used Gypsophilia (also known as baby’s breath) with pink hydrangeas, but you can use just about any flower and greenery you like!
What you will need:
Fresh flowers of your choice
Floral wire
Floral tape (can be bought at craft shops or online)
Cutters (decent scissors & wire cutters if you have them)
Ribbons (length, colour & quantity is entirely up to you)
Step 1: Measure the floral wire to your head circumference (this does not need to be exact as we will use the ribbons to finish and tie the crown together). Bend and twist the each end of the cut wire to make an eye. This is for the ribbon to be threaded through at the end.
Step 2: Cut the flower stems so they are just long enough to be taped into the wire. Starting from the centre of the wire (which will be the front) and working outward, tape a flower or piece of foliage onto the wire using floral tape.
Step 3: Add more flowers/foliage along the wire, building up the depth as much as you wish. Carry on building your floral crown until you reach the end of the wire. The final flower cutting should be taped facing the opposite direction to finish properly. This will also cover the fastening eye.

Step 4: Repeat for the other side. Start again from the centre and work outward to the end of the wire. Finish off the wire end with the last cutting facing the opposite way.
Step 5: Thread your ribbon streamers through the eyes on the wire and tie. The ribbons will then flow down your neck prettily!
There you have it, a beautiful, personal, floral crown. Perfect for summer parties or just sipping gin in the sunshine! Unfortunately for me, I look absolutely terrible in all head wear (very sad but true). So my beautiful younger sister modelled the finished crown for me to photograph for you.
Happy creating!! Katie xx
